The Ben Franklin PTA is pleased to partner with multiple before and after-school enrichment providers to offer fun and engaging opportunities for our students. Excel With Chess (before school)
Class description: Welcome to chess club at Benjamin Franklin Elementary! Each class we will have check-in, lessons, practice play, and an in class tournament round. We ensure that all kids are being challenged and learning something new each week. We offer a Fall, Winter, and Spring Chess Session each Monday at 8:00am, minus school holidays. Our first class we will be assessing all of the students to see what level everyone is at. Based on these assessments, we will have multiple groups. This will also give us an idea what key chess strategies we will be learning throughout each session.
Art with Ashley Hale (after school)
Class description: This class is a young artist’s dream:). We’ll be covering a breadth of art forms and foundations, including: Painting, drawing, slab ceramic clay hand building, ceramic glazing and Printmaking. All supplies are provided including 2 clay firings, bisque and glaze.
Bricks 4 Kids LEGO Engineering (after school) FULL
Class description: LEGO Building - STEAM Learning. All new programs for returning students and 10 classes for fall session! In-school LEGO building classes using technic pieces including gears, axels, and dedicated build kits for each child. Focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art-Architecture-Agriculture, Math) Lessons and hand's on jr. robotics programs, new to learn-build-play each week. Ages 6-12 - multiple levels available during class for all skills from beginner to advanced.
Coding with Kids (after school)
Class description: Do you love playing games and telling stories? If you do, then this course is perfect for you! Get ready to learn how to code and express your creativity. We'll be using Scratch, a fun drag-and-drop coding tool which lets you create cool games, animations, and interactive stories.
In this course, you will build exciting projects like games where characters jump and run on scrolling platforms, stories where you can navigate through a maze, and even multiplayer games to play with your friends!
If you're just starting out, we'll begin by learning the basics of coding games. We'll teach you how to make things happen in your games using loops, conditions, and variables. Returning students will move on to more interesting concepts like using special conditions and making functions that can do different tasks. For those who want an extra challenge, we'll explore advanced topics like game physics, working with arrays (a way to store lots of information), and even adding artificial intelligence to your games.
FREE TUITION FOR A STUDENT IF YOU VOLUNTEER TO CHAPERONE!! As always, a volunteer is required to attend each session. To help make that happen our wonderful vendors have offered free tuition to the child of a parent who volunteers to attend all the sessions.
