Web Site Management

Please read and make sure you understand before doing any website changes.  For questions, contact me

Managing Ben Franklin’s PTA Website

Caveats:  While you will have permission to change anything on the website, please limit your changes to your area.  If for some reason a big oops occurs, stop editing and email admin@mybenfranklinpta.org).  It can most likely be rolled back.

How to get started:

1.     I have created a username and password for you (see sticky).  Please change the password to something else.

2.     At the bottom of www.mybenfranklinpta.org there is a “Sign In” link.  Click that link.

3.     Select the link “Sign in with a different account.”

4.     Enter your email address (e.g. education@mybenfranklinpta.org) and click “Go”

5.     You are redirected to another page where you can enter your password and then click “Sign in”

6.     The Ben Franklin website comes up in Edit mode (you can tell because there are buttons at the top of the page to Create Page, Edit Page…)

What you can do:

As a “collaborator” you can:

·      Create, edit, delete pages

·      Move pages

·      Add attachments

·      Add comments

·      Add/remove pages to the sidebar navigation

·      Subscribe to site and page changes

Editing Pages

Most of the editing you will be doing falls in the PTA Corner Section.  Follow the links to get to the subject area you are interested in.

Existing pages

Click Edit Page (at the top of the page).  A ribbon with formatting, links, etc. appears.

To make a link:  select the text you would like to become a link.  Choose the “Link” button from the ribbon.  You are then asked to either select an existing BFPTA.org web page (“Existing Page”) or to select a “Web address.”  If you would like to link to an email name or other website, choose “Web address” and enter the URL.  Note that email links follow the format “mailto:admin@mybenfranklinpta.org” .

If you are linking to a new page on the BF website, click the “Create New Page” button and name the page.  It is important that you put the page within the correct hierarchy e.g. choose “Put page under PTA corner” rather than “Put page at the top level”

New pages

Click the “New Page” button at the top of any page. Provide a name and a place within the hierarchy for the document.

Attaching files

Files are usually attached at the bottom of the page for which they are relevant.

To attach a file:   At the bottom of each web page is an Attachment and Comments section.  Click the word “Attachment” and a text box will appear.  Click the Browse button to navigate to the file you would like to attach to that page.

Limitations:

·      It is only HTML.  Sometimes the editor gets confused and won’t format text properly.  I select the text and choose the “Remove Formatting” button from the ribbon (looks like a T with an “x” under it).  That usually fixes the problem.  I can then apply whatever formatting I want.  This problem occurs most frequently when cutting and pasting snippets of HTML.

·      Try to provide information in HTML, text or PDF format.  Avoid using .DOC, .DOCX , .XLS, or .XLSX formats as many users may not have those programs on their computers.
