President's Letter from Christine Muenz One of the great pleasures I have experienced in my past two years serving as PTA Co-President at Ben Franklin Elementary is my close association with our school’s principal, Mary Cronin. As she nears the end of her time at Franklin, and heads off to her next adventure at Site 52, I’d like to take this opportunity to sing her praises. Mary has been at Franklin for ten years. In that time her excellent leadership has made our school the terrific place that it is today, with high test scores, outstanding staff, an active parent community, and happy, productive students. In the words of Linda Stevens, Coordinator of Teaching and Learning for the Lake Washington School District, “As a principal, Mary’s skill is beyond compare. She is dedicated, hard-working, and sacrifices nothing to provide quality leadership for the faculty and staff at Franklin.” Mary is an award-winning educator. She has been honored by the Superintendent of Public Education, the Lake Washington International Reading Association, and chosen as Administrator of the Year in 2007 by the Washington Organization of Reading Development. She truly cares about the education, safety, and success of every single child, and advocates for the children in everything that she does each day. Great teachers want to work for Mary Cronin. She encourages, motivates, and supports her staff, which makes for a wonderful environment in which to teach and learn. Kindergarten teacher Kathy Sanchez says, “Mary cares for us personally, she always encourages us to take care of ourselves and to do what we need to do to be happy. Professionally, Mary supports us by sending us to workshops...even as far away as New York!! She sponsors speakers, and gets us whatever we need so that we can do what is best for the kids.” Mary Cronin is trusted and admired by parents as well. We love the joy and passion she brings to every school activity. She gets choked up watching the kids perform in the talent show, and enthusiastically leads the Halloween parade. Franklin parent Brenda Jensen says, “The thing I respect most about Mary is her amazing ability to remain a complete professional at her job and yet maintain such a connection with the kids. They respond to her because she is not afraid to act goofy and silly around them, yet they know she's in control and in charge. They feel valued and safe as a result.” Mary is an energetic and eager participant in PTA events. She calls out the numbers at Bingo Night, runs with the kids during the jog-a-thon, and last fall she even made spaghetti for 500 at our Fall Family Night! Needless to say we are really going to miss Principal Cronin around Ben Franklin Elementary. We thank her for her years of service to our school and our children, and we wish her the Best of Luck at her new school and in her latest adventure! Upcoming Events in 2008
