Lesson Plan 2008-09

October:  Intro to Art.  
Theme: Color theory.  Primary/Secondary Colors. 
Media:  Acrylic or Tempera 
Project: Warhol Shapes. Students trace draw a shape and trace it 4 times onto a white piece of paper by pencilling on the back and tracing over.  Shapes are painted using the primary and complementary secondary colors.  

November:  
Theme: Warm & Cool Colors.  Blending.
Media:  Chalk Pastels (on black paper)

December: 
Theme:  Value Studies.  Shading.
Media:  Charcoal
Project:  3D Snowmen.  Shading is illustrated using 3 styrofoam balls with direct light on them. 

January:  
Theme: Symmetry.  
Media:  Yarn
Project:  "God's Eye" (yarn + popsicle stick).  

February:  
2nd Grade:
Theme:  Shapes.  Positive and Negative.  Repetition.
Media: Paper

4th Grade:
Theme:  Where does paint come from
Media:  Salmon eggs and pigment on wood
Project:  Painting with Salmon Eggs - discuss how native Americans developed a medium for painting.  Grind own pigments (using charcoal).  Mix with salmon egg oil and paint a picture on woodblock.

March: 
Theme:  Critical Thinking.  Writing
Media:  Art Prints
Project:  Lead focused discussion on art prints.  Have kids look at prints and write a story about what is happening.

April:  
Theme:  Texture.  
Media:  Clay.  
Project:
  • (fish?) for 4th grade OR 
  • beads for mobile OR 
  • 2nd grade or something balance & motion
May:  
Theme: Environmental Art
Media:  Rocks/Soil/Natural materials
Project:  Kids build an environmental art piece (outside in the forest area).  Kids take pictures of their piece (can do a collage of the pictures afterward?).

June:  
Theme:  Different ways to make art.
Media:  Tempera?
Projects:  Jackson Pollack.  Show video of Pollack painting.  Kids replicate Pollack painting (using garbage bag raincoats) outdoors.
